Tips On Proper Red Wine Storage

Red wine storage is one of the many factors that you need to consider if you have a good collection of wines in your house. You can easily tell that a person is a professional wine collector or an amateur one by the way the wines are stored and displayed in the house. Correct wine storage is important because this can tremendously affect the wine taste and quality, and yet many wine collectors disregard this aspect.

When it comes to proper wine storage, there are few important factors that wine collectors must be concerned of. One of them is temperature. The tastes of wines are widely affected by the storage temperature. This can also affect the storage life of the wine. The ideal storage temperature is 13 degrees Celsius, although this is not scientifically proven. Chemical reactions may occur when wines are stored at extremely high temperature. This can cause deterioration of the quality of the wine.

Aside from that, the wine taste will also be affected when it is served warm, which, in this case, the alcoholic taste is more dominant. Storing the wine under extremely low temperature, on the other hand, will also make the wine to gradually lose its flavours. For these reasons, it is important to observe the correct temperature level for storage of wines, if you like to improve or maintain its quality.

Another important factor is the relative humidity. But this is not much of a concern for wines that are properly sealed and not yet opened. But for opened wines, it is best to store the wine at relative humidity of about 70%. This is to ensure that the cork will not dry out and leak. In relation to preventing the cork from drying out, it is also ideal to store the wine in a horizontal position. This will keep the cork moistened all the time.

Also important is light. To avoid gradual degradation of the wine quality, keep the wine safe from direct UV light exposure. The ideal place to store the red wine is in the basement or cellar with room temperature.  Observing all these things will significantly help in preserving the quality of the wine, thereby ensuring utmost enjoyment on your wine drinking.
